What are warts ?
Warts are tiny growth on the skin, which may appear on any part of the body, more often on the face, hands, fingers, private parts, neck. The size of the warts vary from a grain of wheat to a pea-nut. The shape often variable, irregular, round, flatly raised on the skin or a pedunculated, hanging type. The warts on the genitals often have cauliflower like appearance. The colour may be grayish, brown, black, reddish or skin colored. The number of warts may be single or multiple.

Cause:
Viral warts, as the name suggests are caused by virus, most common being papvavirus group. Like any other virus disease, viral warts are contagious and spreads by direct contact.

Viral warts and other wart like growths:
Viral warts can be confused at times with other skin growths such as skin-tags ( benign skin tumour), molluscum contagiosa ( growth on the skin, looks like white pearls, caused by another group of virus; often observed in children), moles, birth-marks, lichen planus. A careful look by a trained doctor could make a clear diagnosis.

Treatment:
Warts, in the past and even presently are often treated locally with the help of some liquid or solution. Some cases are treated by cauterization(burning the warts) by skin doctors. All such measures, it has been observed, are temporary; and the warts reappear after some time.
